A World of Sin and Virtue

This re-release was made possible by our Kickstarter backers. Thank you!

You have the unique pleasure of holding in your hands the stolen notes of Aaralyn Quinn, a thief and infiltrator known throughout the world of Noroth, and especially on the continent of Velea. She is infamous for hunting the secrets of the world elite, and for hiding and protecting information thought lost to the ages. And now you've found her notebook, unscathed and clutched in the hands of smoldering corpse.

The book offers an entirely new world to explore, based on the 5th edition of the world's greatest roleplaying game. You'll explore the vastness of the magical continent of Velea and the world of Noroth; a world that eons ago was split apart by godly warfare. Velea is filled with unexplored nooks of wilderness and dangerous beasts, as well as bright, chaotic magic and scheming politics. There is something for every kind of adventurer, even for those who just wants to bash heads and kill monsters.

This reprint of Aaralyn's Stolen Notes to Velea adds over 100 pages of new content. In addition to the writing in the original 2018 release, you'll find information about the deities found in Noroth, information about the available guilds and how to join their ranks, a new monster type, and a divine champion system to accompany the newly detailed gods worshiped in Velea. All of it is presented with a sleek, new design and with hundreds of illustrations.

This is a total re-release of the original setting, with issues regarding some of the written contents, including the depiction of the Zirani people, bearfolk, and a number of subclasses, having been updated. While there are themes, phrases, and mechanics that remain unchanged from the 2018 version, enough elements have been changed that owners of the original version will have an entirely new reading experience when they go through the setting.

So the new version is up for sale here while the kickstart backers that funded the project are still waiting on word on when you will ship the books they paid for. Nice.

The Vistani in official Ravenloft products are problematic enough, but the Zirana take the racism-steeped stereotyped Romani stand-ins a step further by making them literally inhuman? "Looking much like humans, one could be forgiven for confusing a human with a Zirana." It's also worth pointing out that 'gypsy' is a slur, and here it's used as one of the subraces of the Zirana that gives them proficiency with thieves tools and an evil eye ability. Ugh, it's all super gross.

Is there any hope we'll ever see a print version of this title?

Looks fantastic (!!!!!), but OGL is not updated and there's no declaration of Open Game Content. Check Section 6 & Section 8 of the OGL.

This seriously looks like one of the best pdf products I've ever bought, so it's disappointing to see a cut-n-paste hatchet job on the OGL. It -has- been around for 19 years.

Just bought this and I'm confused. It's obviously a well put together book and is beautiful to look at and read. So my question is why didn't you put bookmarks in the pdf???

Honestly... because I am a ditz and I forgot. I'll see about adding bookmarks for the updated version.

Hope you are enjoying it otherwise! Despite the lack of bookmarks :)

Liking this so far, and I'll try and come back with a more substantial comment later, but you should probably know that gypsy is a slur for the Romani people -- it's a common mistake, but you'd be making a small difference if you found an alternate name for that Zirani subrace. (there's probably a discussion to be had about the language of having a "non-human race" to represent a Romani-analog, and how that's a failing of the game as a whole, but I'm not qualified for it.) I think you did better than WotC in a lot of ways, but it's still worth examining what it means to describe a culture mostly in terms of how they steal from (and maybe kidnap) "normal" people.

I can totally see where you're coming from. When I started making this compendium, the Zirani were simply an analogy for Romani and caravan culture. I have ties to that culture myself (English is not my native language, so the word "gypsy" doesn't carry any inherent negative connotations for me), which is why I didn't think anything of it, but I can see why it would be upsetting to some people. I won't remove the Zirani from the document, but I will look over the subrace when I update the PDF at a later date.

Thank you so much for comment, and I am happy that you otherwise liked the document!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
