Shanghai! The city goes by many names: The Pearl of the Orient, the Gateway to China, Nevernight City, Demon City..."the most dangerous city in the world." The sixth largest city in the world, it is the center of culture and industry in China, and the hub of espionage and its close cousin, crime.

The Queen of the Orient is a guide to a pulp fiction Shanghai of the 1930s, where kung fu gangsters battle gunslinging cops, Japanese and Communist spies plot, and adventurers come looking to make their fortune. Made for use with the Fate role playing system. You do need a copy of Fate Core or another Fate rulebook to use this product. This e-book comes with a huge, period-authentic map of the city from 1935!

I've read the PDF, and I'm eagerly awaiting my print-on-demand copy. This volume has a LOT of good material on Shanghai in the 1920's and 1930's, suitable not only for the FATE system but any other system, really. In the limited pages available, the authors do a good job of illustrating the complex political situation and tensions, and provide write-ups of an impressive number of historical people and some I expect made up for the volume. The scenario provided is nicely complex for it's being just a few pages long.

My one complaint about the work is that it needs more careful proofreading. Maybe only once was I unsure what what intended by the author, but it always saddens me when this final polish is given short shrift. That's the only reason I would give this 4 stars instead of 5.

Nonetheless, the maps included are very impressive (and are much better than those of Shanghai as provided in Chaosium's "Masks of Nyarlethotep" campaign!), and I am impressed enough that I'm...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
