MSPE-Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes: Combined Edition RPG

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes (MSPE) was first published in 1983. This is a rpg very similar to the classic Tunnels & Trolls fantasy rpg system, except it is (as the title suggests) for more modern characters with guns, armor and tech. You can play adventures from the Victorian age all the way to the modern era. in 2019 we created this new Combined Edition of MSPE that includes all the material from the Blade 1983 edition, all the material from the Sleuth 1986 edition and almost 20 pages of brand new material including new rules and play advice by best selling author Michael Stackpole (who wrote the original edition of the rules.) It is more of a skill based system than T&T. And the skills are based on modern abilities like computer hacking, gunsmithing, driving etc.

A hardcover and softcover edition of MSPE is availalbe.

If you mean the foldable character sheet, it is present in the rulebook. And for those who prefer a normal (non folding) character sheet, there is, of course, one.

I've never encountered this game before but it seems very interesting being a sucker for pulp, spy, and paramilitary games myself. The cover mentions Solitaire support of some kind, which really sold me. What form does that take?

Just a few solo adventures. I recommend "The case of thePacific Clipper" (by Dave Arneson) that you'll find here on Drivethru.

OK, made my way up through Skills and there is still one old error that is still there. A Revolver is a Revolver. A Pistol is a Pistol. There is no such critter as a "Clip Pistol" really, (with the exception of the Mauser). Pistols have magazines, some rifles had/have clips. Some Revolvers have "clips" (like Moon Clips). It's minor, but still niggling after all these years. Made it all the way through! I liked Michael's additions, as well as Thessaly's and the SF addition. The chart is a bit confusing, but, eh.. Overall? Love it! Great old art and fantastic new stuff (thanks, Steve!). I must say that the .pdf looks and works better in iOS than on my normal .pdf reader. In iOS it scrolls like a book and on the desktop I have to scroll down page by page. Great job all around! I'm not going to mention typos, (there weren't a lot that I saw. Just a few). Y'all did a wonderful job!

Do you know why? Was there an error code or anything? hundreds of people have downloaded it so far so maybe we fixed the problem since you last tried?

NOTE: This is the new combined version of the MSPE rules which includes both the Blade and Sleuth edition material PLUS twenty pages of new rules, items, genres guides and even a couple of maps you can use for your first adventure. We have also uploaded the MSPE GM screen, and updated version Mugshots1 (by Dave Arneson) and the Jade Jaguar solo. (which can all be purchased on drive -thru separately)

Anyone know what the difference between the two PDFs provided are? They look the same. (Both have page 13.) But computing sha256 hashes of them says they’re different.

Whether you are new to the game, or a long time player, drop by Vin's T&T TrollBridge ( http://trollbridge.proboards.com/ ). There are boards for all versions of T&T in general, and for MSPE specifically. Come to learn, or teach, or just say hello!

Finally I can play a Wasteland like game without butchering Tunnels and Trolls too much.
Thanks, Flying Buffalo.

Just wanted to comment that MSPE was amazing.... I still have distinct memories of the many games I played and ran with it back in the 80's...it was an amazingly versatile system for modern gaming. And compatible with T&T, too!

MSPE is one of the most versatile RPGs that I know. I have bought this pdf and the scan is really good. I am super excited to see a digital edition of the game. If you want to know why, I have a review of MSPE on my blog: http://toybox-sw.blogspot.be/2017/05/it-happened.html (follow the links for a full description and a few ressources).
Page 13 is indeed missing. I suppose it should be quite easy to fix it and upload a corrected version.

Bonjour Patrick. It was fun to read your enthusiastic blog on MPSE. I discovered MPSE in July 2017 and have finally gotten around to playing Jade Jaguar (still early days). 39 Steps has been on my reading list forever, and I'm hoping to get around to it sooner rather than later. I had to smile at your Horatio line, since I too have used it in my second book, Rylomos. Salut, Grish.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
