Icons Assembler is a character creation and management application for Icons Superpowered Roleplaying.

Created by Joe Wetzel of Inkwell Ideas (creator of Hexographer and Cityographer), Icons Assembler produces random characters using the tables from the Assembled Edition of the game (including material from Great Power and Icons A to Z), allows for unlimited character customization and editing, and features character sketch tools. It also provides in-play management tools and lets you save and share your Icons characters!

You get Windows .exe, OS X, and Java versions of the application with your purchase, usable for whatever platform you wish. Icons Assembler makes the quick and easy hero creation of Icons even faster with just a few clicks!

Check in with support@inkwellideas.com for options, but I just use the Custom Specialty option to add a specialty with "Expert" or "Master" after the name.

Just installed the 4 Feb 2022 release (1.3) and the Load Character function does not seem to work. I am unable to open characters created in either an earlier version of Assembler nor this one. Anyone else having this issue?

I really want to use this but there are some issues on the Mac version:
- The "roll a die" command always produces a 5 and then locks up at the pop up. You cannot close the pop up window nor can you click re-roll.
- The CP cost is way off on Guided Character Gen characters. Right now I have a character that says "26 points" which is accurate for the attributes but does not seem to include the attributes.
- There are no lists for knacks and all must be entered manually, despite checking "Include Icon Origins Material".
- There is no default list of specialties on blank/non-guided character creation, despite being able to generate these randomly.

I'm not asking for my money back but I am considering using a free solution at this time or creating an excel or google sheets macro that will do the things I want, which is kind of counter productive.

Sorry you ran into these difficulties with Assembler, Randall. I've passed your feedback on to the designer and we'll see what we can do about those issues.

Keeps crashing every time I try to change a rank in an attribute. Any ideas as to why? On Windows 10.

Yes, there was a bug in Java itself. If you download the Java version (and install/update Java) that should fix it. I believe the tool used to build the non-Java Windows version got the fix last week, so I expect to rebuild and post an update in the next couple of days. People have told me they can avoid the bug by either typing the ability score or tabbing to that field then selecting or not tabbing to it. (The bug isn't repeatable on my system for some reason.)

Just wanted to add to my review. The developer has been in touch and has provided a solution for my problem with the images. Use images with a width of around 675 pixels and this works. Thanks to Joe for the personal help.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
