The Swordmage - A Dungeon World Playbook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Warriors stand toe to claw with their enemies, hacking at them with heavy metal blades and counting on layers of steel to keep them safe. While it works, they’re still vulnerable to the immaterial forces of magic.

Wizards are better suited to dealing with that sort of thing, whether it means unleashing elemental forces upon their foes, resisting it, or knowing what’s about to happen. Unfortunately their studies preclude physical activities, so they have to keep a safe distance, lest their flesh by flayed from their bones.

But why choose just one?

Rather than specialize, you weave both spell and sword into a deadly new art. You can hold your own against ferocious monsters in melee, strike from a distance with blasts of fire or bolts of lightning, and even slice through baleful magics should they be employed against you.

This product contains four files.

Two are letter-sized character sheets that use our new character sheet layout. One has a completely blank gear section, while the other fills in the initial choices if you want to just check some boxes and start playing.

The other two are digest-sized books, one in color, the other in black and white (to make it easier to print off at home if you want). They both contain:

  • The swordmage class, complete with 25 advanced moves.
  • New armor, dungeon gear, and an artifact: the black blade.
  • A director's cut with questions to ask yourself when rolling up a swordmage, explanations and suggestions for some of the moves, and some extra moves that didn't make the original cut.

A lot to like about this playbook. It is very similar to the Incomplete Adventurer Spellblade playbook. Not sure if one borrowed from the other or if they both borrowed from D&D 4e. But Spellblade has a move called Sword Magic and this one has one called Blade Magic. This seems to be the main difference in approach.

Blade Magic
When you spend a few moments gathering magical energy into a
weapon you are bonded with, lose all held magic and roll+INT. ✴On
a 10+, hold 3 magic. ✴On a 7-9, hold 2 magic. ✴On a miss, hold 1
magic in addition to whatever the GM says. Spend magic to choose
1:
• Discharge a blast of elemental energy—deal 1d6 damage to a near
target.
• Take +1d4 damage forward to a melee attack.
• Slice through a magical effect—take +1 forward against it

It's missing a few options that are available in Sword magic and it increases hack and slash rather than being an effective replacement for it. Trying to wrap...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
