Brimstone - Abandoned RPG System

Brimstone is a set of d20 RPG rules which was abandoned during development. Rather than hide it away, we've decided to release the unfinished product as PWYW as it it technically playable with some improvisation, and at the very least might contain a variety of ideas and conent which may be useful to transfer into your other games.

The game uses a classless system, where you craft your character by combining individual skills and feats. However the skill list, feat list, and many other elements are streamlined, as the emphasis is on roleplaying, exploration, and survival over endless rules.

The mechanics are based on d20 systems, with some simplifications. Combat is grid-less and mini-less by default, but could be modified easily to use either. Although spell descriptions are included, there are no monsters or magic items; development didn't get that far. You could use easily use any monsters and magic items from another d20 product though, or simply make up your own on the fly.

Hopefully some of the ideas in this 75-page file will be of use to you. Take a peek!

At 71 pages, 68 are the content. Artwork: Very good, quite evocative. I hope they keep to it. The only error I coudl find, was an axe overlaid one some text (top left) on page 19. The characters have the standard STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, [...]

This is an unofficial highly-simplified rendition of Dungeons & Dragons, closest to 5th ed (imho). Noteworthy is that classes are abstracted by merging class features and feats into a broad pool, and by drastically reducing number of skills. I'm [...]

Scoring and reviewing a product in beta can be problematic- after all it is unfinished. So bearing that in mind I gave this a 5 for a free offering of an unfinished rulebook. I have seen dozens of D&D retro clones coming out recently, what stood ou [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
