Saga: the Game -Mythic Edition
by Aaron B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/15/2021 21:47:04

The book - In addition to being able to stabilize my car on the ice, this hefty volume contains about 600 pages, and covers every bit you may need to run, play, and thoroughly enjoy the game. The contents remind me a bit of the 1st editon DMG - tables (not necessarily tables in this case, but info) about a multitude of different details. This book goes further than that original DMG did in some places - for example, it provides a ton of advice and snippets for new players and Loremasters. The world is colorful and vibrant, with a plethora of details for building your own game.

The game - One of my favorite things about SAGA is what it is NOT - it is not a compartmentalized fully standardized follow the dots from A to Z system. It is more like an old school game - when the game master (Loremaster) has all of the info there but needs to use their own imagination and mold the saga with the players. Unlike a lot of modern RPGs, which could easily be coded into computer programs with their very specific rules, SAGA more has information, guidleines and basic rules. Your imagination is the limit. The mechanics are very simple (and I would put this as an entry level game for mechanics - I will discuss those later), but Loremasters and players are given a ton of information, NOT led by the nose. It does require imagination, and development time.

The possibilities for character creation and development are extensive and customizable. Interestingly, character development is very gradual - no get-rich-quick schemes here, really more of a slow burn. It does seem to make it more worthwhile, at least to me (and works best with a somewhat steady or ongoing group). Various tools are used to add unique flavor to the game - I really like use of the karma scale, and resultant good and back luck. The idea of knack for a character's innate talent, story points (plot twists) as the loremaster and players develop the saga together, advantages and disadvantages, character social classes, customization options (anipeople, line of animal speech spells), technomancy (technology meets magic). I could go on and on. There is so much style in SAGA, and it all comes together during play. The different 'player' levels, which they get to based on how much XP they have earned for their characters, naturally allows players to try more difficult or intricate character ideas as they get a better idea of the whole system.

The mechanics - The basic role is just that - basic. You roll x d20s against a target number of y. The more dice you rolled that are y or higher, the better you succeeded. Generally if you got no successes, you failed. 20s are counted as a success and re-rolled, for potentially more successes! 1s are pulls, which remove a success per pull. If you have more 1s than successes, you botch. That is bad :). It is a very simple mechanic. The combat and spell systems are intuitive to understand and flow. Usually the number of dice you are rolling is based on a primary or derived attribute (say strength) plus a skill (say climb). All attributes have a value of 1-10 and skills of 0-10. That's basically it (there are a few bits added, and some advanced rules you can add later, but that is really all there is to it). Character creation is by points, which puts people on a more even footing to start.

The critiques - On the flip side of not being factory standardized, there are judgement calls - somehing that used to be in RPGs a lot but not as much anymore. I like that they are back, but it can create some disagreements at the table. While most people like to game to have fun, beware if you are gaming with people who like to argue.

The mechanics are incredibly easy, which I like. Combat flows very smoothly, especially at low levels (at low levels, another retro idea that I enjoy, one shot kills are a possibility). At higher levels, though, there are a number of factors that help protect characters (and villains) from one shot kills (they still occasionally happen, but much more rarely) - armor, magic, higher stats. The system is still easy, but combats take a lot more time at higher levels. I don't mind exactly, but it is a point I wanted to make (for running SAGA at cons, for example, it is better to use starting level characters).

Character creation is a process - there a wide variety of possibilities so starting characters can be extremely customized. I found this gives me more of an attachment to the character. Then comes along that one shot kill possibility, at times :). I very much enjoy the character creation process, but it is more involved than a lot of other RPGs (and takes a bit more time, and general Loremaster approval).

The finale - This is my favorite RPG. I have been gaming since the late 70s, and tried quite a variety of games and genres. This one keeps me coming back as often as I can. I play with my family, with my friends, at cons. I still play other games, but you can be sure I compare them to SAGA.

The Big Book of Small Quests (And One Big Adventure)
by Amber C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/17/2020 19:38:01

This one is an excellent way, I feel, to get to know people who you could potentially game with. Or to take a break between bigger Sagas for one of these stories. Again, another amazing set! Cannot stress enough to people how amazing the Saga books are and how easy they are to play.

The Temple Prostitutes -Adult 18+
by Amber C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/17/2020 19:11:21

I really wish that I had more than my adult sons to play this with because I know the places that I could take this as a Loremaster. I am really looking forward to being able to find a group (hopefully!!) to play this with because of how great this story will be with the right gamers. 100% agree with you gotta know your gamers on if you could play this with them. It is so why I am hoping to find a group eventually that I can play this one with. Excellent job!

I am so excited for this one!! I am going to start up a game and this is the story we are going to start with! I love the imagery that is used and the characters. This will be an excellent way to introduce the young adults that I have in my life to Saga. I cannot wait to tell the story of the heroes that will be created!

The Haunted Mansion [Map]
by Jonathan O. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/12/2019 15:01:24

Well defined and very clearly laid out. I like the freeform nature of it, letting game masters add their own details and specifics to fit their own game. The monster idea is also super fun. My one hangup, and I recognize that this is entirely personal preference, is that there are no secret doors or passages and no space to add any. I like plenty of secrets in my spooky mansions.

Other than that personal tidbit, a very well thought out and executed map.

Hey Jonathan, We totally hear you about secret passages and rooms. This map was based on a real home layout, which didn't leave us much space for secrets. We so appreciate your feedback. Game on!

Saga: the Game -Mythic Edition
by Amber C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/12/2019 13:27:26

I have played different versions of DnD before I played Saga. I will never go back to anything else now. The guide is thorough and the rules are easy to follow. Not having to worry about which die I need is a huge factor in playing this game. A handful of D20s and I am set. You are getting a top notch RPG when you buy Saga.

Each installment of this game is awesome! It's great to learn more about the world in the game and find new ways to improve your game play. This is the first table top role play game I've participated in and I love it. It helps that it is so affordable. It helps to that I'm friends with the creators. lol Anyway, this latest installment is just as awesome and well worth the read. :)

Desdemona's Pleasure Palace -Adult 18+
by Amber C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/25/2018 11:35:51

OH MY GOSH!

If you have a bunch of friends that you know enjoy a little wink-wink, nudge-nudge action, this is exactly what you need!! It is most definitely meant for the 18+ crowd but it would be a campaign you and your friends will not forget! When you look over the spells and magical items, you realize the wonderful places that you will be able to take this storyline to. So get your best players and remember this: a dirty mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Saga: the Game -Epic Edition
by Don F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/17/2018 22:23:25

Saga is the exact game I have been looking for to introduce my daughter to good old school RPGs. Who dosent have a few D20s floating around. Not a big cost. Easy rules to get down to playing quick and a focus on the fun. I can be summed up in a quote from the game. "Play a Hero. Do not play a bad guy. . . .By participating in role played evil, you actually embrace evil in your soul." That's what we all want; to be a hero, cast a spell, kill some monsters, save a town and find a magic item or two. I really like the way it's designed to take what works for you and have fun.

I have loved this game since the first time I played it. Every time I play it, I laugh and have a spectacular time. Saga is honestly the only tabletop rpg that I ever want to play. No rpg can even compare to this game. Every adventure is unique and new. Thank you so much for making this game. There are none out there like this ❤❤❤
