On the Shoulders of Giants (LotFP-Compatible)

Selected Option:

On the Shoulders of Giants is a setting sourcebook compatible with Lamentations of the Flame Princess and more widely compatible with old school role-playing games and the OSR. Fully illustrated by Scrap Princess, this book details a setting where the characters are trying to eke out a living on the rotting corpses of the Olympians. It includes four new classes: the Conspirator, the Corpse Worker, the Prize Fighter, and the Witchdoctor, as well as a new class for NPCs, the Maggot Farmer. On the Shoulders of Giants practically sloughs off flavor for your old school campaign.

For the Referee, this setting sourcebook also contains a host of monsters and enemies for the players to face, as well as an adventure location/outline, the Gray Pools, and random tables for when you need an NPC right now. In addition, it contains a setting-neutral monster generator for when you aren't quite sure what those cultists have been feeding the corpses to.

This product is an independent production by Apollyon Press, LLC and is not affiliated with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. Lamentations of the Flame Princess is a registered trademark owned by James Edward Raggi IV.

Have you expanded on this any more?

What clothes do the inhabitants wear? Do they live on top of the skin? Under the skin?

If you turned this into a more expansive setting, a chapter on each corpse, you would have the dominant book for rpgs on Body Horror.

This really needs a supplement that describes the setting. I have no idea if the corpses are floating in space, floating in water, sitting on a planet somewhere, nor how the characters move between them. Can the people of the corpses live outside them? Is there a greater world they can explore?

The component that are in this book are good, but I was expecting a setting as well as game information. The lack of any locations, important NPCs, and other concrete setting relating information is very disappointing.

So the attack damage of the Witchdoctor and the Maggot Farmer on the TBH stat blocks are missing. Should I assume that it's 1d4/1 unarmed or imporvising?

As a fan of both the weird and LotFP (though those probably go hand and hand) I decided to pick this book up to inject a little more oddity into my ongoing campaign. Money well spent! Everything in here is useful, from the new classes and monsters to the creature generator and adventure outline. The best part is, though the info contained is married to the setting, you can easily take what you want and apply it to a different setting altogether, all with only a little bit of conversion. I could easily see the conspirator class being reflavored into a bard, for example.

All things considered, I think this is a great work and I highly recommend it. 10/10

Your full-size preview would not render for me. Never sure if it's my browser or your PDF.

I'm not sure why that is; both the quick and full-size previews are using the same file. It wouldn't render on Google Chrome but worked on Safari for me, so it looks like it's the browser.

I just got it to work with Firefox so it looks like you're right. But you might want to look into getting it to render on Chrome, since that seems to be a pretty popular client these days.

It seems to me like it is a problem with the platform, not the PDF, so I'll contact publisher service.

My inability to see your preview is not worth contacting DriveThru support. I'll just skip it. Maybe that makes this your problem? It's not like I'm unable to see any PDFs on Chrome.

I don't know what to say. I just tried to access the preview PDF on Google Chrome again and it worked, even though it didn't work for me before, and the Publisher Support representative said he didn't have any problems. Perhaps it was just a temporary technical glitch.

Sorry if my last comment sounded harsh. I actually already picked up your sourcebook (it's very nice) because it sounded interesting and I'm a big Lamentations fan. But I usually make a lot of purchasing decisions based on previews, so I wanted you to be aware.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
