The Nameless Grimoire is a supplement for The Nightmares Underneath (and other old school fantasy role-playing games) that covers spells and spellcasters.

Now revised for the second edition of The Nightmares Underneath, this book includes:

  • 666 spells and dozens of variations, arranged in 33 spell schools (with simple guidelines for specialist caster), as well as a single d1000 table.
  • Optional rules to modify spellcasting, including an extensive magical miscasting table, various effects that can be used to customize spells, and rules for using material components (second edition only).
  • 6 new character types: Battle Wizard, Blood Caster, Chaos Mage, Shadowsneak, Sorcerer, and Spellslinger.
  • Options for supernatural heritage or sorcerous backgrounds that give your characters mechanical benefits and drawbacks.
  • A new random equipment table for wizards and spellcasting characters.
  • Some procedures to help you create your own arcane traditions, including two new social institutions (second edition only).
  • Random spell name tables and random wizard name tables.

The first edition version of The Nameless Grimoire pdf comes bundled with the revised second edition pdf. The first edition includes:

  • 4 other character types: Avatar, Druid, Mystic, and Witch. The second edition versions of these will appear in other books.
  • Rules for divine patrons and six example patrons. The second edition versions of these rules will appear in their own book, where they can be presented in more detail.
  • Rules for crafting your own magical items, made from magical ingredients. The second edition version of these rules will also appear in a separate book.
  • A short bestiary of monsters mentioned in the spells. The second edition versions of these monsters will appear in their own monster manual, along with those from The Nightmares Underneath.

The Nameless Grimoire is intended primarily for use with The Nightmares underneath, but you can use it with other old school games if you like. Only the first edition reprints the spellcasting rules, however, and they are not the same as those in the second edition.

The pdf is Digest sized pages, 5.5 x 8.5 inches, while the print version is US Trade sized, 6 x 9 inches.

Hi there. I notice that the The Nightmares Underneath has form fillable sheets. The extended classes in this book do not seem to have them. Was this simply and omission? Or intended for some reason?

Yeah they were supposed to be in there and that's an error on my part that they were not. I've updated the 2e zip file to add the form-fillable sheets for the Grimoire classes, so if you download it again they should be in there now.

Hiya. Did "The Incursionists" come and go already, or was it side-tracked?

I can't decide between this and the Lulu hardcover version. Are there any differences apart from the dust jacket? Paper quality or something similar?

Yes, they are considerably different. The Drivethru version has white pages and is perfect bound, the same as the softcover's interior (all of Drivethru's B&W options are basically the same quality). The Lulu version has cream-coloured pages, slightly better print quality (in my opinion), a black linen cover under the dustjacket, and depending on where in the world it gets printed, may come with a more flexible glue binding that allows the book to lie flat when opened (though sometimes it's just normal perfect binding).

Thanks for the informations. I think I tend to Lulu version, but I have to save some money first.

Yes but only from Lulu. There's a hardcover version clearly marked first edition over there.

Thanks! Would it be possible to cancel my print order and pick up the first edition from lulu? I'd be happy to pay any extra shipping costs.

I have no control over that, so I have no idea, although I'd expect not if the order has gone to the printer already. You'd have to email DriveThruRPG's customer support and see what they can do for you.

Will this book work for other OSR games [Black Hack] without a lot of tweaking?

I think so. The rules are pretty solidly osr, I'd say they're closer to the Black Hack than they are to DCC or Stars Without Number, for example.

The book mentions another product, "The Incursionists", with regards to monsters such as golems & elementals. I'm guessing that one is still in the works, as I can't find it anywhere on the Web?

Excellent news! TNU is such a beautiful and well thought-out game I really can't stop recommending it to my friends and can't wait to run a longer campaign! Good luck with "The Incursionists" :)

The dust jacket hardcovers are no longer available from the previous POD source :( , will you be printing them via DTRPG or will they be available via the previous system later?

Lulu recently did a site revision that was not entirely smooth, so I have to check all my titles there to make sure they are okay before I put them back up for sale. That should hopefully be soon. Once The Nameless Grimoire is updated to the 2nd edition rules, that will probably be available in print here on DTRPG as well.

I think books on Lulu might be region-locked. I am from Europe and I cannot make any order from them. I have no problem ordering printed materials from drivethrough, however.

Hi Johnstone, love your stuff!

Are there any gotchas or other things to be aware of when using this with 2nd Edition TNU?

Hi Ralf,
Most things should work just fine. Effects that de-memorize a spell should cause spell corruption instead. With the new static Disposition rules, most spells that cause 1dX + caster level damage should lose the level bonus and spells that do 1dX per level damage should be just a die (or two) + caster level. And you might have to change some of the sorcerous professions to match the new Wizard, but that's about it I think!

Again, can we expect Print on Demand version? I wanted to order directly from US, but 40 dollar shipping fee is just too much for a single $60 book.

A print option is coming soon! It just takes a long time for the proofs to get to me in Canada, so small problems mean extra-long delays. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
