Lurian Trailing Cluster - Book 1

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The waters of the Deluge have receded.
We have survived.
Now, we must reclaim our birthright: the stars.

The Lurian Trailing Cluster was once a remote frontier, settled by misfits, renegades, and anyone desperate enough for a second chance on a distant world. Now, six centuries after the cataclysmic Deluge wrought untold destruction on civilization, the worlds of the Cluster are clawing their way back into space. But among the untold riches to be found in the heavens lie dangers too terrible to contemplate. Only the bravest and boldest adventurers can possibly survive the trials that await humanity in the stars.

Lurian Trailing Cluster Book 1 is a science fiction setting designed for Stars Without Number, by Sine Nomine Publishing. In this product, you will find a brief history of the Cluster, as well as summaries for all fourteen of its worlds, faction data, and star maps. Three worlds are given fully detailed write-ups, including system and planetary data, trade tables, maps, and societal histories.

I'm starting to go through this set of three sourcebooks, and generally I've been liking it. It's surprisingly close to a fleshed-out form of some ideas I'd had about a setting for an SWN campaign.

It seems like the description of tech levels is a bit different from the base SWN rules. As described, it emphasizes the advantage of the Karta Trading League in technology and mobility, setting up for a theme about colonial exploitation. But, as I read the SWN rules, I'd have thought that Lur should be described as a TL4 world, given it's pursuing an aggressive program of constructing a TL4 station and a fleet of interstellar ships; it seems pretty much in the "default" condition of a modern world in SWN rules. On top of that, it seems implied that Lur would be the default homeworld for PCs in the sector, and most PCs -- especially those in the expert class -- would need to have a background that allowed for postech technical skills.

Thanks!

The Lurians are TL3+ at the outset of the setting, because they have just barely begun building Spike-1 drives, mainly through retrofitting and cannibalizing. The idea is that this is the absolute best they can muster. In nearly every other respect, they are a TL3 society. It won't take them much time to get them to TL4, but as written, they're barely in the game again.

The PCs do not have to be from Lur, though it is indeed intended that many campaigns would begin there. The Lurian Astrogation Academy at Voltaire is the most advanced center of learning on the planet, and does have, with KTL sponsorship, a technical school that can produce TL4-capable engineers. Naturally, these engineers and their skills are highly demanded by the Lurian Merchant Houses, the Lurian Navy, and anyone who wants to have qualified Lurian spacers in their crew.

Had 2 questions about the PDF.

1.) The 3 fully detailed have a cart of Occupied Orbits for the planets, etc. in the system, but I'm not sure what the numbers meaning on the charts and represent as I can't find any rules for occupied orbits in any of the SWN stuff. So can you explain how Occupied Orbits work or point me to where the rules on them are?

2.) Native Artwork has a price listed much higher than in Suns of Gold. Suns of Gold also gives artwork a price if it had the Low Tech tag. The Low Tech tag isn't listed as being a tag for that good except on one chart in Suns of Gold. (Suns of Gold look like it has an error with this good and the Low Tech tag got removed from some places or the price wasn't fixed.). So should I give Native Artwork a Low Tech tag and reduce the price on the trade tables or not.?

1) It's SWN, there are no rules for Occupied Orbits, but I figured we'd put them in there just so that players and GMs can get a better sense of place in the system. Traveling between system "regions" in SWN takes 48 hours, divided by the vessel's spike drive rating, as per p.65 in the free version of SWN.

2) In Suns of Gold, Native Artwork has the tags "Cultural and Luxury" on ALL the tables, EXCEPT for the table for Agricultural Worlds (P.20), where it also has the "Low Tech" tag. In any case, the price per unit in Suns of Gold for Native Artwork is 10,000Cr in ALL instances, even when the Low Tech tag is included. So that's a minor error on the part of the author of that book.

3) There is an error in LTC1: on page 26 of the PDF, in the trade table for Lur, it says Local Artwork (Cultural, Luxury) 25000, when it should read "Native Artwork (Cultural Luxury) 10000". The entry for Meza Virs has the correct price. We will upload the correct file...See more

Just bought it and am very impressed with it I'll do a full review in a few days. I did notice this right away just on a brief read through of it.

Lur has the Tags of Progressive and Liberal, but those tags aren't in the core SWN rule book. They are in the Expanded World Generation product you publish.

(So you might want to have a note for that or just reprint those 2 Tag descriptions in an Appendix.)

That product also cover some of the things that are in the world descriptions like Biosphere, Population, etc. that the core SWN book doesn't cover.

You have no mention of the Expanded World Generation product ought to be listed as a required or recommended book in the Intro because it uses stuff from it in the worlds.

Thanks for your input!

We are seriously considering adding the Progressive and Liberal tags to the next updated version of this product.

Also, Biosphere, Population etc are in the SWN core book, pp.91-93 of the free version.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
