Cityographer Western City Map Icons (Any Editor)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Want to flesh out a western city for your game? Or add more variety for a Modern or Medieval city? (Many of the images can cross these genres.)  Include this set of 200+ city map images including 125+ building icons/symbols in your image library!  Art by the amazing artist/cartographer Keith Curtis.

You may publish maps using these icons--see the license below. Full list of buildings is also noted below.

Each image is a transparent PNG so it can be imported into many image and map editors, including our Worldographer program and its predecessor Cityographer. (Each has a paid version and a free version which limits importing custom map icons, number of residents it will auto-generate and a few other options.) Smaller buildings (houses, small shops) are generally around 200x200pixels.  Other buildings are larger.

To use these in Worldogrpaher:

  1. Unzip the file to your computer.  For best results, put them in a worldographer folder in your user folder. (Ex: c:UsersGeorgePBurdellworldographer) You'll have to create this folder first.  by default, this is where Worldographer looks when you use "Add Configuration Subfolders" on the Configure menu, but you can change it via "Change Configuration Folder" also on the Configure menu.
  2. Start Worldographer and go to the Configure menu to pick "Add Configuration Subfolders" then select the "settlement-western" folder that should have been created when you unzipped the file. This loads the images into Worldographer.
  3. Also on the Configure menu, pick "Configure Settlement Data".  Then click the "Load Configuration" at the bottom of the dialog that appears. Choose to clear the prior data or not depending on what you want.  Next, use the file chooser that opens to select the "settlementconfig-western.xml" file that is within the "settlement-western" folder that was created when you unzipped the download.
  4. All set!  Go to File and pick "New City/Town/Village Map" to create a new map.

To use them in Cityographer:

  1. Unzip the file anywhere you'd like on your computer.  (Perhaps create a cityographer folder.)
  2. Then when starting a new map, change the "use default map items" drop-down to "override map items" and use the adjacent file chooser to browse to the "___-mapitems.properties" file in the unzipped folder.
  3. If you wish the program to place buildings automatically change "Use Default Data" to "Override Data", then use the "___-gensettings.properties" file for the adjacent drop-down. You may also use the "___-linesettings.propeties" file when you change "Use Default Line Styles" to "Override Line Styles".

Map Icons for our Worldographer software (PNG images, usable with most image/map editors)

Worldographer is version 2 of our prior Hexographer, Cityographer, & Dungeonographer programs. All have free versions downloadable from each program's website.

There are simply too many to show!  See the full range on the category page.

Index of Inkwell Ideas Map Icons:

Each month we've made 4 mini-sets of icons (battlemat, classic world/kingdom, isometric world/kingdom, & settlement) following a theme such as "Greek" or "Elven" or "Temples".

Each year we've bundled up each monthly mini-set of that style:

Battlemat
(dungeon/building interiors)

Classic
World/Kingdom

Isometric
World/Kingdom

Settlement
(mostly top-down buildings)

The monthly sets are also available, but from 2020 onward each month's icons are only availaible as one combined product. (The "Coasts" set from February 2022 has all the battlemat, classic & isometric world/kingdom, and settlement icons in one product/download.) February/March 2023's icon set is a little different--it has 100's of icons in only a "Ring Lord" world/kingdom map style.

I am having an issue where when I open the png files, copy, and then paste them into a pdf, they have a black background instead of having nothing. Can you help me with this?

They are transparent PNGs in our zip file. The black background is something that the pdf program is doing incorrectly. All I can suggest is a web search like "pdf adds black background to transparent png", sorry.

Never mind, I found out how to insert the image without copying and pasting it from the windows' photo application. Now it seems to be working properly.

A nice, easy to use set of top-down images of western frontier structures. I've found this quite useful, but I wish there were stables!

Would this set work in Photoshop? Or is it suitable for the types of websites you mention only?

I bought this directly from the author and would give it 5 stars if I could. This pack allows you to quickly build a western village with Fractal Mapper or a similar app. There are a generous number of pieces of overhead art. And yeah, you might have to do a little work to get it all organized to your liking or needs - but it is just art assets - and the license for their use is generous. If you don't have the fortitude to move files into folders, look elsewhere.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
