Geldeheim Castle

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Geldeheim is the seat of Alegar II, King of Orbaal and valhakar of Clan Taareskeld. The castle is Orbaal's strongest fortification and sits on the south shore of the Geldesfjord, the most populous region of the kingdom. Geldeheim's rulers are warlike viking invaders from Ivinia who, despite conquering far northern Hârn more than 50 years ago, remain vastly outnumbered by the oppressed indigenous Jarin folk.

The Geldeheim Castle article describes the settlement's history, government, religion, economics, and military forces. Includes a full description and color floor plans for the castle, along with color GM and player maps of the settlement. Brief descriptions are given for many local craftsmen and other locations in the town. Several locations are given an expanded treatment and have detailed descriptions, color floor plans, and adventure hooks. These include the temples of Sarajin and Agrik, the college of heralds, the shipyard, a hideworker's shop, and the ruins of Annwyn, an ancient and abandoned hillfort.

This article supplements other Columbia Games products: Kingdom of OrbaalAtlas Map H2.

I must say that the price tag is obscene... We are talking about a 28 page count article .pdf which is being priced at $22.48, which is close to most corebooks´ .pdf.

Columbia Games has always been this way. I've been buying their stuff since the 80s -- well, not now. Certainly not since they got the idea that anybody's going to pay over 20 dollars for a PDF of a single article that first came out in 1987 or something. I mean look -- I have the original "Geldeheim Castle" article in print form, from the Orbaal Kingdom book from the 80s. This is obviously much higher quality of layout, with more maps, color, all that stuff. But it's still just one article about one little place in a very big world. And if it's anything like the originals, these things have very little adventure seed material. It used to be almost all people and places.

Grant Dalgliesh still runs the company, I think, and I'd really like to hear his justification for charging these ridiculous prices.

Regarding adventure seeds, that is an area that the more recent articles have focused on. As for pricing, I don't have insight into their numbers of course, but I'm sure they've figured out that charging say half won't double their customer base. Certainly some people are willing to pay the price. It's a niche product and for those that are into the level of detail Harn offers there are few, if any, competitors. Plus, as noted, the layout and maps as well as expansion of previous content is very nice.

Brian don´ get me wrong. I´m discussing the quality of the products. I have a "modest" collection myself. What is undeniable is the the price they charge IS ridiculous for what is out in the market. You want to compare level of detail, Price for value?! Go Argan Argar Atlas of Glorantha. But it´s not the only product or line with a great level of attention to detail.

They could have charge exorbitant prices in the past when competition was less. Charging that in the present for a past article with the level of products you can find now I must say is brilliant if they manage to pull it off, meaning if there´s people willing to dish out money. But that is just my opinion.

Brian -- it's $22.50 for a 28-page article. That's 80 cents a page, for a PDF of ONE building complex. One castle in a remote area. Anyway, they can charge what they'd like, but I wonder how they have stayed in business. These prices, all of them, are ridiculous. $40.00 for their underwritten Bestiary of 110 pages. Electronic. $1.50 for a two page article on Sheep. Same for Goats! Electronic.

Who is paying these prices of stuff that's not even a physical copy?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
