Deep Space – Echo Quadrant 3H-8 – The fully loaded commercial freighter T.C.S. Brown, its seven-member crew in suspended animation, is making the return run to Earth. In the cargo hold lies Dr. Viktor, also in suspended animation, and the mysterious specimen containers that came on board with him.

Awoken from their slumber to repair the damage caused by a meteor collision, the crew discover to their horror that Dr. Viktor has been killed and one of the mysterious specimens has been let loose as a result of the damage…and it is a life form that will stop at nothing to survive. The seven astronauts have only the tools and resources onboard to subdue and kill an organism never before encountered–an organism that evolves quickly into a nearly-unstoppable predator. Now, a simple repair job becomes a desperate struggle for survival.

In addition to trying to kill the crew, the Specimen is also actively trying to destroy the ship. If the crew doesn't stay on top of repairs, the ship will blow up!

SPECIMEN is a card-driven two-player strategy board game. Each turn comprises four action rounds, where each player can perform one of several possible game actions. The Specimen’s movements are hidden from the Crew player behind a game screen, and the Specimen’s location is only revealed when the Specimen attacks…or if the crew is lucky (or unlucky) enough to find it!

As the Crew:

• Search the ship to find the monster
• Construct weapons to fight the monster
• Repair the damaged ship
• Form teams to work more efficiently

As the Specimen:

• Choose from 25 different offensive, defensive and special attributes
• Move in secret through the ship
• Stalk the crew and attack out of the shadows
• Destroy the ship by damaging it section by section

Specimen's artwork includes an impressively detailed top-down ship map, as well as event card images that evoke a live-action sci-fi movie.

Pre-publication review from Fathergeek.com, Sept. 2012: 3 out of 5 stars.

Gamer Geeks, this game is going to rip you a new one, in a good way! It is very challenging, engaging, and without mercy. The game play is not at all straightforward at first and the game has a steep learning curve. Once you figure out how to play it, however, the game still doesnt become easy. The many different things a player can do, be they the nasty space creature or the hapless crew, is simply mind-boggling at times. The game does an outstanding job of challenging you and feels very rewarding when the game concludes, although you will feel winded. Indeed, the Gamer Geeks had to walk away several times from the table to just collect their thoughts as the game progressed. For those most elite of Gamer Geeks who enjoy a challenging 2-player experience, this game is sure to please.

If you are looking for a horror Sci-Fi themed game for 2 players, where survival is based on cunning, strategy, and tactics (regardless if you are part of the crew or the creature hunting them), then do get your hands on Specimen.

Our Players Comment:

Bought this direct as a print-n-play from the publisher's website a couple of years ago immediately after their Kickstarter failed. Fun game. Uses traditional wargame tools - counters, six sided dice, wargamer's ruleset layout. Two player game. A ton of strategy that doesn't reveal itself without repeated play. Can get very tense very quickly, and has the feel of a traditional bug hunt movie, complete with large numbers of the cast dying. The mix and match of Specimen abilities allows for a variety of playstyles, from sneaky ambush types to bloodthirsty ragers. Recommended. I'd add a review in the correct place if I bought a second copy anytime soon.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
