Machinations of the Space Princess

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Machinations of the Space Princess is a Science-Fantasy role-playing game. That
means it’s very much about style over substance, mixing science-fiction, magic and
psionics in a game world that owes much more to Metal Hurlant and Star Wars than
it does to 2001 or Bova’s Grand Tour. This is a game of strangeness and fun, of space
pirates and beautiful alien princesses, of living planets and robot hordes, of blasters at
noon.

This is...

Sexy, sleazy, swords and sci-fi!

A full game combining old and new school thinking, packed with GM and player advice and with simple tools for creating your own monsters, adversaries, weapons, armour, ships and alien races.

NOT REALLY FOR ADULTS PER SE, BUT CONTAINS RUDE WORDS LIKE 'BUM', 'POO' AND 'WILLY'.

Hi,

I was thinking of picking up the POD on LULU, and there's two version: B&W and Colour. I'd spring for the colour but it costs over twice as much, and all of the art that I've seen in previews is line-art. Could you tell me what makes it... uh... colour?

Thanks!

The art has colour versions in the colour version, and the page layout also includes colour.

What monster set can someone use for this? I have come across a lot of games recently where the GM is expected to generate their own monsters. It is a great concept but I do not have the time sadly. Can I just use OSR monsters directly(and if so, from which game?) or will you be releasing an alien compendium or something of the like? I have friends who like the OSR style of play and would love a sci-fi game, but like I said I don't really have time to generate a ton of aliens, monsters, etc.

Most OSR type compatible stuff should work, with a little tweaking. The beauty of the monster creation system is that you can make basic universal versions and then slap 'race' stats on top of them.

Offering the pdf here and the PoD at Lulu is annoying. I know other authors do it. It is annoying. I'll pass.

I don't find Lightning Source to have such consistent quality as Lulu, and it's a huge PITA to upload huge, temperamental files to multiple sites.

Was given an ARC of this game to review on my blog. While my blog is no longer in place I'd like to say that I have actually run a campaign of this game and that I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Are there any other books needed (e.g. D&D[Version]?) to fully play the game?

No, this can be played stand-alone. Some extra monsters/gear might be recommended, but all the rules you need are right there in the PDF.

does this have an alien generator?

I'm so tired of seeing previews on RPGNow that barely preview anything worth previewing. This is yet another example of a horrible preview. Out of 10 pages, there are only two (three if you count the table of contents, but that's pretty generous considering that half of the chapter headings are vague and the other half are generic) that give any idea of what sort of game this is, and they don't really tell me anything that I couldn't get from reading the product description.

Publishers, here's a tip: if you can't bother taking the time to make a decent preview, don't put up a preview at all, because a half-baked preview just makes you look lazy and/or incompetent. This has been a Public Service Announcement.

They're only meant to be tasters. Nobody wants to give away too much..

I agree with Matthew. I don't know whether the website did this automatically or the publisher did it. It seems to be automatic?
You don't have to give away to many pages. Even one page of the real content plus cover will be enough for me. It will help me to know the style, the language and the background a little.

There's a difference between not giving away too much and not giving away anything at all. Your 10-page preview includes the cover page (which I can see just fine in the quick preview), one blank page, *two* pages of OGL, a credits page, yet another "What is an RPG?" description (pointless, given the target audience), and a page devoted to author and publisher blurbs. That's at least six pages -- more than half of the preview -- that tell me next to nothing about the game's contents. As tasters go, that's like giving someone a taste of your hamburger by handing them the wrapper it came in.

I wouldn't be harping on this so much if I didn't see it over and over and over. It's not meant as an attack on you personally. I'm hoping that if I say something every time I see another lousy preview, it'll build up to enough of a critical mass that some publishers might take the hint and try to do better. And indeed, there've been one or two that have taken my criticism to heart and actually posted...See more

Just notice you are in Shanghai, I am a Chinese player in Tianjin. There are less players here, but many DMs of different systems, mostly DnD or COC.

Not sure if that was directed at me or at the publisher. If it's me, I've no idea where you got the idea that I live in Shanghai. (I *used* to live in Hong Kong, but I haven't been back there since 2006, and I've never been to Shanghai.)

Yup, after looking through the Quick Preview, I have to totally agree with Matthew R. The preview told me nothing about the book. I don't give a damn about the OGL, all the playtesters, or how to play an RPG. Show me some art and some text that shows how this game is better than all the other weird science fantasy games out there.

James D, the OSR is a hash of borrowed and recognizable ideas, from Chainmail through 1e to the forums that drove the retroclones. Whatever you've got might be a clever twist, but respectfully, it is probably not original. What most of us look to in a publication is an elegant and artful recapitulation of beloved themes and familiar mechanics that inspire us to play. Preview that and people will do right by your efforts.

I just downloaded the file MotSPPDFCOLOUR.pdf, and when I attempted to open it in Adobe Reader, I received an error message telling me the file is damaged and could not be opened. I tried downloading it again and received the same message when attempting to open the second version of the file.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
