Foreword by Justin Achilli

Edited by Jonathan Jacobs, Kameron Franklin, Berin Kinsmen, Tony Law, Ben McFarland

Inside you will find timeless interviews with Dave Arneson on the roots of roleplaying games, Robin D. Laws on RPG theory and game play, and Jonathan Roberts on his career as a master cartographer. Open Game Table, Volume 2 features in all 65 articles from across the blogosphere that serve as the perfect complement to Open Game Table, Volume 1:

  • GM and player advice on character and campaign design,
  • sandboxing,
  • story pacing,
  • play styles,
  • gaming with your kids,
  • New 4E D&D Monsters & NPCs
  • and much much more.

Open Game Table was made possible by dozens of participating RPG blogs and the combined efforts of over 70 authors, artists, editors, and fans. It's a true community effort. A peer reviewed, vetted collection of the very best in RPG blogging.

"Open Game Table is exactly what the busy gamer needs, a collection of the best of the best available online..." -- Julie Dawson, Bards & Sages Magazine review of Volume 2.

"I found myself enraptured by the thoughts and ideas in the collection, some I agreed with, others I outright disagreed with but that was what made it so exciting, it got me thinking..." - review of Volume 2 by Roberto M at Stargazer's World.

"...there is something for everyone in here, from the hoariest grognard to the indie designer to the new arrival looking to expand their horizons..."-- Satyre's Fame & Fortune Blog on Volume 2.

WIRED.com's GeekDad blog says Volume 1 is "... a treasure trove. A tome worth killing a few orcs for." and "The kind of brain stimulus role players need, diverse and quality content."

Bards & Sages Fantasy Review says "Open Game Table, Volume 1 is the reference guide equivalent of a Deck of Many Things, ... you can draw from it again and again."

Open Game Table, Volume 2 brings that same level of excellence back to the table, and never misses a roll.

When I reviewed Open Game Table: The Anthology of Roleplaying Game Blogs, Volume 1 back in October 2009, I felt it was a monumental and worthwhile compilation of game material from around the blogosphere. Jonathan Jacobs somehow managed to do everythin [...]

Much like the first volume, this anthology contains some great articles covering a variety of RPGs (though D&D tends to receive the lion's share). While not every article is going to appeal to every reader, the overall contents and sheer variety of [...]

Much like the first volume in the anthology, there are tons of articles on tons of topics. There are character options, DMing tips, tips on player styles, and things to spice up your game. Again, $5 isn't much money for ton of advice on gaming. I like [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
